Our Commitment to Safety

Sailing Safe

Safety is of paramount importance to everyone involved in DSA-Alberta programs. The personal safety of both sailors and volunteers is each individual's responsibility. When in doubt, please ask questions.

  • Glenmore Reservoir provides an excellent venue for safe and exciting sailing. The City of Calgary provides safety boat patrol services during our sailing season;
  • When required, specialized medical lifts and slings are used to safely transfer sailors in and out of boats.
  • VHF radios and cellphones keep the sailor in contact with the on-shore Program Coordinator;
  • Lifejackets are mandatory while on and around the water;
  • Specialized "Samsuits" keep our sailors warm under all conditions.

Staff and Volunteer Orientation & Training

Every season, our dedicated DSA Alberta staff and over 100 volunteers contribute to the safe operation of our daily programming.  Providing comprehensive orientation and training for our staff and volunteers is a key component of our focus on safety. Our program includes Volunteer Orientation days, a Staff & Volunteer Training Guide covering all aspects of our operations, qualifying Volunteers for Sailing Companion role, and providing "hands-on" training during the season.

Liability Release and Medical Information

Participants in all DSA Alberta programs (members, clients of community partnership events and all volunteers) complete a Release and Assumption of Liability and a Medical Information and Release. Completed forms are kept on file in the DSA Alberta office.  Information provided on the Medical Information and Release form is confidential and will only be used to assist in the event of an accident, injury or medical emergency, and to identify emergency contacts, parents or legal guardians, etc.
